Rhode Island là tiểu bang với diện tích nhỏ nhất của Hoa Kỳ. Tên chính thức của Rhode Island là The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations (Tiểu bang Rhode Island và các Đồn điền Providence). Providence là thủ đô, tên nghĩa là “phù hộ của Chúa”. Tiểu bang này có nhiều toà nhà cổ xây theo kiểu Victoria. Rhode Island là khu thuộc địa Anh đầu tiên tuyên bố độc lập khỏi Vương quốc Anh, ký Tuyên ngôn Độc lập Hoa Kỳ ngày 4 tháng 5 năm 1776.
